Getting started

How do I get started?
  1. Choose File → New Project (⌘N). A project is a normal folder — by default in Pictures/ImogenPro.
  2. Open Settings → Providers, pick a provider and follow its step-by-step guide to get an API key. Paste the key and click Verify.
  3. Type a prompt in the composer at the bottom of the window and press ⌘↩. Results appear in the selected folder.
Where do I get API keys?

From each provider's own developer console — for example OpenAI, Google AI Studio, BytePlus, Kling AI, MiniMax, xAI, Alibaba Cloud, Black Forest Labs, Recraft, Topaz Labs, Magnific, Stability AI or fal.ai. Imogen Pro includes a guide for each one in Settings → Providers, with links to the right pages, pricing notes and common errors.

Most providers require billing to be set up (often a small prepaid balance) before image and video models work. A good place to start is a provider whose models you already like; you can add more any time.

Do I still pay the AI providers?

Yes. Imogen Pro sends each generation directly to the provider using your key, and the provider bills your account at its own prices. Imogen Pro never adds a markup or resells credits. The composer shows an estimate before you generate, and Project Settings → Costs shows what each project has cost.

Why is the cost different from my provider's bill?

Imogen Pro records the cost the provider reports when it can, and otherwise estimates it from the published price list. Providers sometimes change prices, round differently or bill extras (such as input tokens). Your provider's billing page is always the final word. If you pay a different rate — for example with a discount or a resource pack — set a custom rate in Settings → Pricing.

How do new models show up?

Imogen Pro checks its model catalog and price list at imogenpro.com about once a day. When a provider releases a new version of a model that works the same way, it appears in the model picker without an app update. Models that providers shut down are retired automatically. Bigger changes arrive in app updates.

Free generations and purchases

What counts as a generation?

Each image or video that a cloud model creates counts as one, and so does each cloud upscale or other cloud tool result. Generating four images at once counts as four. Failed generations don't count.

Always free, and never counted: browsing and organizing your library, search, tagging, importing, and Apple's on-device super resolution and frame interpolation.

Do I get 100 free generations on each Mac?

No, the 100 are shared. If you're signed in to iCloud, Imogen Pro keeps the count in your iCloud account, so it's the same on every Mac you use with that account. Reinstalling doesn't reset it. A plan unlocks unlimited generations on all of them.

What happens after my 100 free generations?

You can keep using your library as before. To keep generating, choose Monthly ($29), Yearly ($239) or Lifetime ($699) in Imogen Pro → Plans…. Until 31 December 2026, the launch offer makes your first 12 months of Monthly $19 a month, your first year of Yearly $169, and Lifetime $499. All three unlock unlimited generations; they differ only in how you pay. You still pay providers for usage.

How do I restore my purchase on another Mac?

Sign in to the App Store with the same Apple Account, open Imogen Pro, choose Imogen Pro → Plans… (or Settings → Plan) and click Restore Purchases. Active subscriptions usually appear automatically.

How do I change or cancel my subscription?

Subscriptions are managed by Apple. On your Mac, open the App Store, click your name in the bottom-left corner, click Account Settings, and find Subscriptions. You can also go to apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions.

Cancel at least 24 hours before your renewal date to avoid the next charge. You keep access until the end of the period you've paid for. To switch between monthly and yearly, choose the other plan in the same place.

If you buy Lifetime while subscribed, remember to cancel the subscription so it doesn't renew.

How do I get a refund?

Apple handles payments and refunds. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. For charges from an AI provider, contact that provider.

Projects and folders

Why does Imogen Pro ask me to choose a folder?

Apps from the Mac App Store run in macOS's App Sandbox, which only lets them open folders you've chosen. Projects in your Pictures folder work automatically. For a project somewhere else — another folder, an external drive or a synced folder — choose it once in the Open panel and Imogen Pro remembers it.

If a project shows that it needs access (for example after it was moved, renamed in Finder or its drive was reconnected), select it and choose the folder again when asked.

Where are my files?

In the project folder you chose — they're ordinary image and video files you can open, move or back up with anything. Imogen Pro keeps its index in a hidden .imogenpro folder inside the project and stores each file's prompt, model and cost in the file's extended attributes, so the details travel with the file. Right-click a project and choose Show in Finder, or right-click a file and choose Reveal in Finder.

Can I use a folder that's already full of images?

Yes. Choose File → Open Folder as Project (⌘O). Existing images and videos are indexed and tagged on your Mac; nothing is moved or renamed.

Claude and other assistants (MCP)

How do I connect Claude?
  1. Open Settings → MCP and turn on Enable MCP server.
  2. For Claude Code, copy the claude mcp add … command shown there and run it in Terminal.
  3. For Claude Desktop and other apps that launch a command, copy the JSON snippet into the app's MCP configuration and restart it.

The server listens only on your Mac and requires the access token shown in Settings. Regenerating the token disconnects existing clients until you update them.

Can an assistant spend money on my provider accounts?

Only if you allow it. Turn off Allow assistants to generate and upscale in Settings → MCP, and assistants can still search, organize and fill in the composer for you, but you press Generate yourself. Generations started by assistants count toward your free generations like any other.

Why can't an assistant import a file from my Mac?

Because of the App Sandbox, Imogen Pro can only read folders you've given it access to. Add the folder under Folder Access in Settings → MCP so assistants can import from it, or drag the files into Imogen Pro yourself. Assistants can also import from web links.
